I didn't want to assume that you'd work fast food or retail in college so this is just in case you have a desk or corporate-ish job.
Dress Codes:
In the work world, there are different types dress codes and it's important to know what's what.
Business Professional
The most dressy of the dress codes that you'll likely encounter is business professional. Think a suit and tie for men and a pantsuit for women. Other acceptable attire includes a pencil skirt and nice blouse or a professional dress with a blazer. Professional dresses must be knee length and cover your shoulders, it's a pretty conservative dress code, be as modest as you would in a church. Think Elle Woods in her black lawyer outfit before she pops off in pink
Business Casual
This is what my job's dress code is, it's the best of both worlds. You still get to dress up for work without the confines of a full on pantsuit or stuffy outfit and heels. Whether or not jeans are permitted is entirely based on the company, make sure you ask beforehand. Most places allow nice, unripped jeans for business casual. My company, however, does not. So it's always good to check. Business casual is just a nice blouse or blazer with clean, unripped jeans and heels or flats. Or it can be a simple (yet modest) dress. If you wear heels, they should not be any higher than 3 inches, anything more is unprofessional as it is too high.
Smart Casual
You probably won't encounter this too often, if at all but I thought I'd throw it in just in case. It's a little hard to differentiate from business casual. It's less formal than business casual but more formal than jeans and a t shirt. It could be jeans and a pullover sweater (not a hoodie) and some flats. For some companies, smart casual just means business casual but with jeans (in the case that jeans wouldn't be permitted under business casual).
Pieces to have and where to shop
When it comes to professional wear, you can't go wrong with a small capsule wardrobe. You really don't need to go all out for work, most people just mix and match the same pieces. Some essentials include:
3-4 simple blouses
1 or 2 tank tops for layering
1 or 2 nice cardigans
3-4 pairs of dress pants
A blazer
A white button up shirt
A pair of non-distressed jeans
A pair of flats
A pair of short heels
There are a billion different stores to get these items at, it really just depends on your budget. I'll include some low-mid price point stores and some higher price point stores as well.
